EARLY PK NON CALL CHANGES GAME FOR LA
The score line may not have been a flattering one for the Galaxy, but the definitive moment in the match came in the 15th minute.
Down 1-0 after Eddie Johnson’s goal in the sixth minute and with the Galaxy pushing for an equalizer, defender AJ DeLaGarza made a run into the box and was brought down by Sounders outside back Leo Gonzalez. With DeLaGarza motioning for a call, the play was waved off by the referee leading to outrage in the Galaxy bench and in the locker room after the match.
Non call aside, Johnson’s goal was the seventh time this season that the Galaxy had conceded a goal in the first ten minutes and the ninth time that LA had conceded within the first 25 minutes in 2011.
SOUNDERS ATTACK OVERWHELMS GALAXY DEFENSE
Seeking to put pressure on the Sounders from the start, the Galaxy opted for a high defensive line that found itself out-stretched repeatedly against Seattle.
Throughout the match, the quick Seattle attack was able to capitalize on Galaxy turnovers, which in turn created considerable problems for center backs David Junior Lopes and Omar Gonzalez, who found themselves out-stretched several times.
This benefited the swift Seattle attackers Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero, who were able to use their speed to exploit the Galaxy back four en route to the first two goals of the game.
GALAXY CAN NOT TURN POSSESSION INTO CHANCES
In a difficult match all around for the Galaxy, perhaps the most damning stats were the possession and shots on goal. Despite a 56.8% to 43.2% possession advantage, the vaunted Galaxy offense was only able to generate two shots on goal against the Sounders.
After a Robbie Keane shot forced a save from Seattle ‘keeper Michael Gspurning in the 7th minute, the Galaxy went 77 minutes between shots on goal with their next chance on frame coming in the 84th minute off an effort by Landon Donovan.
The offense issues did not end there as the Galaxy also struggled to generate chances out wide as the Seattle outside back tandem of Leo Gonzalez and Adam Johansson were able to neutralize David Beckham and Sean Franklin from creating chances on the flanks.
